WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE IN A BLUE SMOOTHIE BOWL?

This healthy smoothie bowl requires just three ingredients: bananas, blue spirulina powder, and plant-based milk. You can add in any mix-ins of your choosing, like hemp seeds, too!

  • Bananas. Frozen bananas are the main ingredient in this recipe. They help to create a thick and creamy consistency that’s similar to soft serve ice cream. Bananas are rich in potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C.
  • Blue spirulina powder. As the name suggests, blue spirulina powder gives this smoothie its blue appearance. Spirulina is high in iron, copper, several B vitamins, and powerful antioxidants.
  • Plant-based milk. Any plant-based milk can be used for this blue smoothie bowl recipe. I prefer almond milk, but coconut milk, soy milk, and oat milk will all work just fine. If you aren’t vegan or dairy-free, you could also use regular milk.
  • Hemp seeds. Hemp seeds, although optional, are a great addition to this smoothie. They are high in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and more.

Other optional mix-in ingredients include:

  • Frozen fruit (mangoes and pineapple pair well with bananas)
  • Chia seeds, flax seeds, or ground flaxseed
  • Protein powder (make sure to use a light colored powder, such as vanilla protein powder, so the smoothie keeps its blue appearance)
  • Nut butter (such as almond, cashew, or peanut butter)

We all know smoothies are one of the quickest and easiest recipes to make! All it takes is three simple steps and five minutes to create this blue smoothie

  1. Add ingredients to a high-speed blender.
  1. Blend ingredients until smooth and creamy, adding more liquid if needed (depending on your blender’s speed and power).
  2. Scoop smoothie into a bowl. Top with fresh fruit, granola, coconut flakes, nuts, seeds, or any other desired toppings.

Have you ever scrolled through Instagram and been captivated by a beautiful, vibrant blue smoothie? You probably wondered what on earth created such a pretty blue appearance. Well, the answer is blue spirulina powder.

WHAT IS SPIRULINA?

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that grows naturally in fresh-water ponds and lakes. I know, it sounds weird… and kind of gross, to be honest. I promise it’s not! Spirulina has gained popularity in recent years due to its high nutritional content. Spirulina is loaded with nutrients, vitamins, and minerals including essential amino acids, iron, copper, vitamin B12, antioxidants, carotenoids, and so much more.

WHAT DOES BLUE SPIRULINA TASTE LIKE?

Spirulina comes in two varieties: green spirulina and blue spirulina. Green spirulina tastes like the sea. To be honest, it’s not pleasant. On the other hand, blue spirulina is flavorless and odorless. That’s right – there is no fishy taste or scent when you use blue spirulina! This makes it a far superior choice, in my opinion. You can add it to any recipe and it will go undetected, aside from the gorgeous blue hue it brings to your meal. In other words, you can’t even taste the blue spirulina powder in this blue smoothie bowl.

WHAT CAN YOU PUT SPIRULINA IN?

Believe it or not, spirulina is not just for smoothies! You can also mix it into chia pudding, yogurt, oatmeal, and pancake batter. However, if you are using green spirulina powder (which contains a sea-like flavor), it is best used in smoothies and smoothie bowls. This is because the sweet fruit will hide the fishy flavor.

CAN YOU PUT FOOD COLORING IN SMOOTHIES?

I do not recommend adding traditional food coloring to smoothie bowls. You would have to use copious amounts of food coloring to achieve the desired result. Instead, opt for natural “food coloring” like superfood powders or real fruit!

How to create any colored smoothie bowl:

  • Red: black cherries, acerola powder, strawberries, or beet root powder
  • Pink: pitaya powder or frozen raspberries
  • Orange: mango, peaches, oranges, or turmeric powder
  • Yellow: pineapple or turmeric powder
  • Green: leafy greens such as spinach and kale, or any greens powder
  • Blue: blue spirulina powder
  • Purple: blueberries, blackberries, or açaí
  • Black: activated charcoal
  • Brown: chocolate protein powder, cacao powder, or carob powder
  • White: bananas or vanilla protein powder

CAN YOU MAKE A BLUE SMOOTHIE BOWL WITHOUT SPIRULINA?

At this time, the only way to create a true blue appearance is by using blue spirulina powder.

Notes

  • Be sure to use frozen ripe bananas. Ripe bananas contain a yellow peel with brown spots. Remove the peels and place the bananas in a ziplock bag or container. Store bananas in the freezer. Bananas will keep fresh for one month in the freezer.  
  • Use more or less liquid depending on your blender. Remember more liquid creates a thinner smoothie consistency while less liquid creates a thicker smoothie.
